City Wardens for Dublin would quickly put an additional visible and reassuring presence on the capital's streets to support policing. I'm running for the Seanad to push ideas like this in parliament. Listen back to my discussion of the details on Newstalk:

Send a Scientist to the Seanad. It is many decades since Trinity graduates last elected a scientist to the Seanad. I am the only scientist putting myself forward in this year's election and will bring a strong problem-solving evidence-based approach to parliament. Vote Kevin Byrne No.1

For Dublin to live up to its immense potential it must become accountable to its citizens with a powerful directly elected Mayor. This is the norm for major global cities, and the Dublin Citizens' Assembly and Dublin Taskforce both recommended it. Crises don't get solved unless someone is in charge.

Part of making a better Dublin is getting more people living in the heart of the city. Trinity has a crucial role to play as an existing vibrant community in the centre of Dublin's historic core. We must also protect our built heritage, something TCD has decades of experience at.

Trinity College Dublin has long had a unique voice and role in Irish life, both North and South. If honoured to be elected to the Seanad to represent TCD graduates, I will help promote that voice, and protect the College's independence from further encroachment.

Getting people living over shops in the heart of Dublin is vital & welcome. However the buskers' fear of noise complaints is valid. Australia has 'eyes wide open' clauses so new residents must formally acknowledge they are moving into an area of existing late-night or on-street entertainment.

Many of the challenges of our day need continental-scale action - Ireland cannot tackle them on her own. As a Senator I will be an advocate for our membership of the EU, as I have been since my student days in Trinity.

While advocating for Dublin and university research are what motivated me to run in this election, being born with a physical disability, with my active involvement in promoting the arts, and being a long-term cyclist & e-bike user, I bring a rounded perspective to the role of senator.

Dublin is a great city but it's not meeting its potential. No one is in charge and no one is accountable to its citizens for its current issues. Dublin needs the Directly Elected Mayor it was promised. As a Senator I will challenge this neglect. My vision is for a clean, green, safe Dublin.

'People's perceptions about safety in the city are real' - Is Dublin unsafe?
The attack of two off-duty GardaΓ over the weekend has - again - raised questions about the safety of Dublin City Centre.
I spoke to Newstalk yesterday about public safety in Dublin. I made clear that 'people's perceptions about safety in the city are real' and as well as increased policing discussed introducing City Wardens to put a further reassuring presence on the capital's streets.
