"Incarcerating the people sleeping outside...in the U.S. would take nearly $18 billion per year."
"For...half that...we could house the 84% of people who experience homelessness but receive no housing...because the system is chronically underfunded."
-Margot Kushel/Samantha Batko.

When They Go Home After Working All Day, Itβs Not to a Home (Gift Article)
Thousands of working people in New York City now live in shelters, unable to afford apartments despite holding down jobs that pay them $50,000 or more.
Many people who exp homelessness work all day--the public just doesn't see them or recognize them. (Neighbors fought against these homeless shelters for working folks, too)
Strongly recommend @brian-goldstone.bsky.social book "There is no place for us" to learn more.

Trump is on track to ditch a time-tested approach to combating homelessness
The Project 2025 plan called to end βhousing-firstβ policies.
βHousing-first...describes a strategy that best pairs housing with services in the most efficient way possible,β says BHHI Director Dr. Margot Kushel (@mkushel.bsky.social). Its voluntary approach preserves dignity & autonomy, increasing the odds people embrace treatment.
