The “store of value” idea may have a time element.

Nothing is forever.

But over short enough time frames there is stability. Not true for investments.

My friends know “nothing is forever”. But over the timeframes of concern they have confidence…

I’m just an armchair observer. The three part definition I got from a Milton Friedman book decades ago.

Gentle push-back question: I have friends who keep their life-savings in cash in their home. They consider it a store of value.

The old saw of “keeping money in a mattress”.

Currency is a store of value, a unit of exchange, and a medium of exchange.

Not a great medium. Can’t use crypto to buy a sandwich at my corner deli.

Unit of exchange doesn’t feel right either. Not stable enough.

And given losses in the crypto market, not a great store of value either.

Understood. So even the underlying premise is a bit shaky.

Crypto is referred to as “currency” but I don’t think it meets the definition. Now it’s treated more like an investment (like tulips).

The idea that crypto has “scarcity” may be incorrect.

There is a difference between limited supply (crypto) and scarcity.

Scarcity means that there’s not enough to meet demand even if the price was free.

Anything can be currency if commonly accepted. Cigarettes in prison. Shells in earlier culture.

With crypto the thing is a digital record.

Limited supply supposedly creates value.

Anything can be currency if commonly accepted, even a digital signature.

Public key encryption (invented years ago) permits safe exchange of money. Blockchain (recent invention) allows individuals to connect without a third-party facilitator or regulator.

Crypto is a digital currency with an (artificial) limited supply that supposedly makes it valuable.
