Large concrete statue of a priest with his right arm outreaching and pointing.

This statue of Junipero Serra, Spanish missionary, Catholic saint and a major participant in the subjugation and genocide of the native California peoples, has been removed and destroyed by Caltrans. Erected with private money on public land in the 1970s, I for one shall not miss it.

A spectacular trackway in the Permian Organ Rock formation of Canyonlands NP. On the Green River, just downstream from The Turk's Head, river-left. I'd guess it's 20-30cm wide, but hard to judge at the distance. Amazing how the slabs are just sitting on display. Anybody know anything about it?

Yes, I just based my estimate on the 880,000 kWhr production figure given for the plant

It's about the same amount of energy as you would get from a 400 kW solar plant, which would be a little less than 2 acres or about 8000 m2 in area.

The beautiful Point Bonita on the Marin Headlands at the entrance to the Golden Gate and San Francisco Bay.

Check out the dark basalt cliffs and the pillows in the arch. They almost look like they erupted yesterday.

The Business Case for Hydrogen This is a short summary of the comments I made at RE+ 2022 on a panel about the business case for hydrogen. A good place to start a discussion of hydrogen is to step back, look at the big picture, and...

This is a LinkedIn article I wrote three years ago that briefly tries to give that bigger picture view of why we need green hydrogen.

When you contemplate what it will take to replace the fossil fuel infrastructure that underpins our current standard of living with renewables, you realize that 80% of our energy is delivered as molecules and those storage and transport networks can't be entirely replaced with wires.

18.08.2025 14:22 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

I was referring to hydrogen generated from renewables. Zero carbon means everything runs on wind & solar - you have to have a way to couple that to ALL sectors of the economy. Hydrogen is a way to do that in many sectors - you can't make steel, cement or plastic from batteries for example.

18.08.2025 14:22 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 1    πŸ“Œ 0

Hydrogen is a fine way to generate power, a fuel cell is as efficient as the most efficient combined cycle gas generator with zero emissions. But really it is just one tool in the toolbox for a zero carbon economy. Batteries and hydrogen have different strengths and weaknesses, you need both.

Carrauntoohill, highest mountain in #Ireland at just over 1000m. An awesome though strenuous hike, the views from the top on a clear day are more than worth it.

The rocks below the Broch of Gurness in #Orkney are wet and seaweedy today, but 390ma they were a dry lakebed with dessication cracks. Mapped as the Rousay Flagstones, these sediments record many cycles of fluctuating levels in Lake Orcadie during the Devonian.

A lovely example of soft sediment deformation in Devonian lake sediments on #Orkney. The vertical bedding is due to Neolithic inhabitants erecting this fine geological example as one of the Stones of Stenness.

A nice "It's all connected!" of the type we like in Earth Sciences. The Barringer Meteorite Crater impact in Arizona might have triggered landslides in Grand Canyon, blocking the Colorado River and forming a rather long and narrow lake for a while. πŸ§ͺβš’οΈ

In 1847, at the height of the Irish potato famine, the Choctaw donated US$170 to the Irish people, not long after themselves having endured the Trail of Tears. The Irish did not forget, in 2020, they were among the highest per-capita donors to the Navajo and Hopi Nations for COVID relief.

This is so sad, the loss of the Lodge on the North Rim to the Dragon Bravo fire. I was there just last September, such a beautiful place. At least there were no injuries or lives lost. But I can't help feeling it will take a long time to recover. The picture below was posted to Reddit.

While the tech is simple, the economic decision is not, and it's on the order of a new car. The question of "how big a system do I need?" is non-trivial. The interaction of Utility tariffs, export compensation, and system design on payback is something you could make a feature length video about.

I assume it's like the $1/Watt target we had for solar around 2007. At the time it seemed pretty aggressive but was where we thought we had to get to. Of course the industry blew right past it faster than anybody anticipated. Not sure that will happen with CDR πŸ˜€

Interesting, thanks. Given the dire state of the Colorado it seems inevitable that the lower basin will eventually have to accept curtailment of deliveries from the upper basin, sr. rights or not. At that point solar may simply be the only and best use of the land they are forced to fallow.
