You are not wrong, at all. Frameworks do most of the heavy lifting, help balance things out, and genuinely make the process like unto a game itself. I would love to see a system like that brought into Pathfinder.

One of the things I always liked about AD&D 2nd edition was that it encouraged players to create custom spells in the guise of independent spell research, in the Player Handbook (a primary source!), and though the rules were not super fleshed out, that said a lot about how magic was framed, to me.
