Theme #5: Resources (eg worksheets) help contain emotional intensity of therapeutic interactions. A worksheet is an external point of joint attention. They are tangible and offer a familiar grounding; structured & achievable; focus sessions on specific things rather than open conversation

Theme #4: There were benefits and challenges to school staff using TGFG in tandem with EPs. There is a risk staff do not feel confident. However, EPs could deliver the therapeutic work, before school staff implement behavioural strategies saving time & enabling YP to work with familiar people.

Theme #3: TGFG helped practitioners make CBT developmentally appropriate and engaging for YP.

Theme #2: TGFG was used flexibly, combined with other therapeutic modalities, and its resources were adapted. Some practitioners (particularly those less experienced) like to follow the structure rigidly, and some YP benefit from structure.

Theme #1: Practitioners felt practically and emotionally supported by TGFG – it’s used as a planning aide, revision manual, reminder, and tool to share in consultations. Less experienced practitioners feel more comfortable reading directly from the book.

The “workbook” is an underexplored concept in the literature of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Unlike manuals, workbooks provide resources without prescribing standardized procedures for practitioners to follow, potentially allowing for greater flexibility.

Our study interviewed 6 EPs.
