Portrait of Elizabeth I, by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger c 1597 (one of the Armada portraits) formerly in Master’s Lodge at Trinity College, where it is seen in the photo of GM Trevelyan in 1943.
In 2015 it was transferred to a place of honour above the High Table in the Hall of Trinity College, to mark 40 years of admission of women and to commemorate the Queen’s support of the College. After foundation by Henry VIII, Elizabeth I helped fund the Great Court, the Hall & the Masters Lodge.
Portrayed in stiff, patterned gold brocade, lace & pearls, with ostrich fan, the learned & pious Queen rests her hand on prayer books; an ornate, gilded throne upholstered in silk velvet to her right.
