The writing is very good. Sharp, funny. Insightful. Apparently, the book was a bestseller when it came out in 1989, the year my second child was born and only news related to diapers and toddler tantrums entered my brain.

Reading these two. Weirdly reading the Spanish rather than the English translation of Zweig and reading the English translation from the Spanish of Quintana's novel.

In 2005, I was rejected by an MFA program in which two of my friends were in their second year. My fourth book of fiction will be published next year and they have no books published. I know there are many variables involved in such things, but still. I so wanted to be in that program.
