"Black-owned Dream Con's first event in Houston resulted in a $19.2 million economic impact for the city, organizers say. The Texas-based anime and gaming convention event, founded by RDCWorld, was hosted at the George R. Brown Convention Center from May 30 to June 1. The event saw a total of 32,674 hard ticket sales, which excludes promotional tickets, a 64.6% increase compared to Dream Con 2024. Last year's event was hosted in Austin and saw 19,853 hard ticket sales, according to Kendale King, Dream Con's CFO and director of partnerships."

The growing convention first established itself in Waco in 2018 and has jumped around different Texas cities as momentum for the event has grown. After two years at the Austin Convention Center, Dream Con moved to Houston to accommodate its growing attendance, convention co-founder John Newton previously told the Houston Business Journal. Dream Con 2024 had garnered Austin an estimated economic impact of more than $15 million, organizers said last year. For comparison, Houston-based Anime Matsuri, the largest anime convention in the state, draws approximately 60,000 attendees each year and has an annual economic impact of between $10 million and $25 million, Anime Matsuri founder Deneice Leigh has told the HBJ.

Deneice Leigh made a cameo in the Houston Business Journal today to claim that Anime Matsuri usually draws double what Dreamcon (featuring special guest Megan Thee Stallion) did and brings between $10-25 million to the city every year lololololol
