Philosophy Tuesday There is this common trope bandied about that Buddhism’s foundation point can be summed up as: “Life is suffering.” This is, at best, an incomplete simplification and a gross mistranslation. Better…

#Mindfulness Moment: While it's always out there in the backgrounds, somehow I heard this a number of times this year alone (including onstage at a convention!). So, let's explore.

What's really the thing about Buddhism and suffering? :)

Architecture Monday What first strikes my eye here are the walls.  Made of large, connecting, concrete squares, they are not either a typical concrete block like unit nor is it the smooth beauty that is an Ando-like c…

#Architecture Monday: There's just a lot of elements in this house that I really like: courtyards; light, texture, and shadowplay; big and intimate spaces; and a green roof. But it all starts with the big blocks. :)

Philosophy Tuesday Grooving off of last week’s post, there is another concept that perhaps has an even bigger hold in popular contemporary myth.  And that is the idea of the Alpha Wolf.  (Or expanded to the notion of…

#Mindfulness Moment: Riffing further on last week's post, let's talk about wolves! Because boy do they have quite the hold in our contemporary myth (and who they truly are is even cooler):

#Mindfulness Moment: Musing about crabs, pots, reality TV/game shows, and the truths they certainly do _not_ reveal.

Bonus: A link to a lovely moment from the Olympics. :)

#Architecture Moment: This is a crafty one! In that it is a school for crafts work. Landscape oriented, a cool mix of precise design and rugged old brick, lots of great light and space, has both work spaces and dorms, and is all wrapped around a courtyard. Love it.

Modplayer online in javascript You can play online your good old modules with this javascript player. Work only on Safari and Chrome. Not sure it works on mobile.

Something fun & a super blast from the past (early 90’s), a .mod file that mixes both smooth & poppy synth w/ old school telephony (rings/modems/operators). I’ve loved this track since I first heard it. :)

#Mindfulness Moment:

We only get one chance to sell our integrity. Maybe a few, if we’re sneaky about it.

But unless we work to repair it, once we’ve sold it, it’s known that it’s been sold.

And then no one will freely or fully give us anything, be it their time, respect, help, or attention.

Philosophy Tuesday Let’s talk about our buts.  Alas, not our butts, though we could talk about that too… no, instead about when we use the word ‘but’ and how it differs from when we might instead use the word ‘and’. …

#Mindfulness Moment: Butt time! Oh, wait... apparently it's only 'but' time. Still, a good distinction between it and 'and' that seems so minor that it couldn't possibly be consequential yet is quite powerful indeed. :)

#Mindfulness:

You are whole and complete

You always have been

And you always will be

You may not experience it

And you may sometimes take actions that don’t reflect it

But it doesn’t change that fact

There are just barriers to your experiencing it

Welcome to the New Year

Oh yeah! "I'm sending it back to hell from whence it came" spoken within the first mins. Help the outcasts is cutting. Hellfire is pure metal (& also cutting). Follo is one of the best Dis villains. It (IMHO) suffers from shoehorning in attempted funny/light bits, but the core still shines through.

#Mindfulness Moment: I've spoken a bunch about the power of apology, and I love how this speaks to how much we could as a society value them more. I doubly love how this also looks at its intersection with the legal system and with those who profit from it:
