I haven't played much classic RE or SH, and the difficulty curve here was fucked in ways that majorly impacted my gameplay experience, sadly. The rest was awesome though! Excellent atmosphere, incredibly evocative imagery, and a plot I'm still trying to piece together (which I enjoy)

19. A Series of Rooms

After a shaky and somewhat hamfisted start, this really pulled itself together. Exactly as dark as it needed to be while also immensely heartwarming in equal measure. I can't speak to the lived experiences of sex trafficking survivors, but as a story it really worked for me

-giving monsters insane health pools and damage output, the sheer amount of *time* it took to kill some of these fuckers (looking at you, Acidic Glavenus and Blackveil Vaal Hazak) massively dragged down the expansion's middle section for me. I look forward to Alatreon and Fatalis actually doing that

With a lot of these fights, you can *really* feel the cracks in World's fundamentals widening, but other times you're actually given openings to Do Shit and in those moments it's genuinely a lot of fun. I still think that G Rank in these games should focus more on strict time limits and less on-

I can confidently recommend anyone interested play this with the Iceborne Community Edition mod, I can't even imagine how much less fun this would have been had I been needing to tenderize and then exclusively focus the tenderized hitzone for every single fight, some of them sucked enough as is lmao

18. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (Main Story)

First G Rank/Master Rank I've finished! Still have tons of endgame shit left but I'm marking it complete here. What a roller coaster ride; sorta sucked ass in the middle but started and ended VERY strong so I can't complain too much

Of course, not every work needs an unreliable narrator or deep hidden meanings, Klune's stories are very entertaining regardless! I just think that when he's is going this hard on his themes he could benefit from a bit more subtlety

There's a subtlety and nuance to Ishiguro's writing that respects the reader's intelligence and ability to read between the lines. In contrast, Klune seems to write for the lowest common denominator, spelling out every otherwise subtle implication and leaving no room for ambiguity

I read The Remains of the Day in December, and it was hard not to compare certain moments of this to that book. While I love Klune's characters and genre work and appreciate his commitment to providing quality genre fiction with queer protagonists, that comparison did him no favors unfortunately

17. The House in the Cerulean Sea

I've been a huge fan of Klune's work for years but somehow never got around to this one. While I do feel he's written much better both before and since, this was very charming and wholesome, and I absolutely understand why it's the one that got all the attention

A craven, soulless remake of my favorite generation? Yep, and yet faithful in a way that makes them feel like old gen Pokemon the way that XYORAS sorta do too, and I gotta admit a lot of the nostalgia bait worked on me

16. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (Village)

Monster Hunter at its best is utterly sublime, and at its worst has the propensity to drive me up the highest fucking wall ever built. 3U thoroughly embodies both extremes. An absolutely fascinating take on the formula that I'm very glad to have played

That said I've never been overly fond of Prime 1's combat, mostly thanks to its enemy design mostly consisting of gimmicks when it's not a glorified DPS race, it's intermittently *fine* but it's never been why the game is good and I feel the game would be improved for having less of it

Other enemies are usually pretty reliably dodgeable but it takes pretty good dash timing and you do have to position somewhat well to avoid being in bad situations like where your dash off of one enemy just moves you towards or away from another that's about to fire a projectile in a straight line

Pretty much tbh, at least when you're fighting space pirates or the like, any enemy with that slightly random spread of bullets is practically impossible to dodge 100% reliably, that's why you're given so many energy tanks

“Are you my mummy” vs “are you my daddy”

...the book would likely have been stronger in my view had it *not* answered so many of its own questions so definitively.

As Lynchian as the story feels in tone and themes, it could have taken a few more pages out of Lynch's book and have been better for it, both thematically and tonally

The meaninglessness of it all could have come across much worse if the book weren't so intent on drilling home that same meaninglessness across its narrative. Still, I found myself somewhat unsatisfied by the end in ways that didn't feel totally intentional
