Satire oder Wahnsinn? RΓ€tselraten um Alexander Eichwald bei der β€žGeneration Deutschlandβ€œ Das Informationsmagazin im WDR Fernsehen.

You gotta love this for the neofascist AfD because a Hitler imitator addressing their youth conference embarrasses them to their very core.

X as "a Russian nesting doll of bullshit" with "fake people yelling at fake people for being fake" enabling a "nothing is true everything is possible moment" is the best burn for long time in crowded field. Kudos @cwarzel.bsky.social @micahloewinger.bsky.social and NPR.

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as β€œthe most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

I've had a missile blow up next to my airplane, been shot at dozens of times by anti-aircraft fire, and launched into orbit β€” all for my country. I never thought I'd see a President call for my execution.

Trump doesn’t understand the Constitution, and we're all less safe for it.

I don’t want to seem out of touch but I don’t actually understand the economy anymore.

I just got a nearly 45% bill hike from @microsoft.com which is one of the world's top three richest corporations for an annual subscription to its standard suite of apps. If anyone else is grabbing pitchforks I'll happily join you. Surely only monopolies can pull this shit. Paging @ec.europa.eu.

Public media is under attack We should be outraged

Imagine turning on the TV or radio and knowing what you’re about to see isn’t engineered to drive outrage, clicks, or profit, but to inform, educate, connect. That’s the role of public broadcasters like BBC, NPR, PBS, NOS, RTP, and itΒ΄s under attack.

Many issues here. One is equating dangers of today's far left with today's far right, which is off in terms of dangers to diverse communities in Europe. The far left can mestasize but last I checked (and I have) the security services of most member states are worried about the far right.

I think this line of argument is seeks to redefine a cordon sanitaire to the point of making it seem like it never actually existed.

We used to have standards about the political parties we did business with on the right. Times clearly have changed. But it's still important to mark these shifts honestly and publicly.

The busting of the cordon sanitaire is a big step towards the troubling dynamic you describe. I guess that's way cordons are there in the first place.

Either way, relying on the hard right majority does represent a sharp turn away from the previous prerogative of centrist majorities. Political scientists and historians have been warning about this for years now.

Historic. Commentators making parallels with early 1930s accommodation with Nazis. Long story short: conservatives combine with far right and neofascists to pass legislation. The vote was about business supply chains but will be remembered as another waypoint on the EU's lurch rightwards.

Commission launches first Annual Migration Management Cycle under the Pact on Migration and Asylum Today, the European Commission is taking a further step in implementing the Pact on Migration and Asylum by launching the first Annual Migration Management Cycle.

Border militarization klaxon.

Merging of migration and defense policies in Europe continues apace with announcement of €250mln purchase of drones to stop hybrid threats like incursions by other drones, and presumably migrants.

1/ The US Government has quietly removed a memorial to Black soldiers who died in World War II from the Netherlands American Cemetery in Margraten, South Limburg. The move follows a complaint from the right-wing Heritage Foundation to the American Battle Monuments Commission. ⬇️

Ep.107: Shame, Falsification, Normalisation of Radical Right, EU Vote, The Lonely Olive Vicente Valentim on why illiberalism seems to spread so rapidly.

Definitely not the most uplifting podcast for the weekend 😬, but a very insightful listen for those concerned about how rapidly reactionary and far-right ideas are spreading across Europe.

A Journalist Asked Why Israel Isn’t Paying to Rebuild Gaza. It Cost Him His Job. Italy’s Nova news agency confirmed it let reporter Gabriele Nunziati go for asking a European official about Israel at a press conference.

How to talk about Gaza remains highly divisive in European journalism and the way it's playing out has significant implications for press freedom. Story @theintercept.com

Pro-Which Europe? β€œEurope wins!”, β€œEurope’s dream”, β€œGood news for Europe”: last week’s Dutch election results led to jubilant headlines.

Dutch election result = one more constructive voice at EU top table. Good. But one swallow does not make summer, writes @sophieintveld.bsky.social.

Pro-European these days can even mean disregarding the constitutional order laid down in the EU Treaties.

Ep.121: Ungoverning the EU Alberto Alemanno on an unwelcome Transatlantic alignment.

My 10 cents: Europe could do the innovation and even the military innovation talked about by @eurobriefing.bsky.social if onlyΒ Europe would stick to its, well, guns. For a deep dive on the EU chainsaw and why it's the wrong policy at the wrong time check out this episode with @alemanno.bsky.social.

By then European leaders had succumbed to bullying by the likes of Vance, Musk, Meta and ExxonMobil out of fear Trump would further dial down security guarantees. The leaders were also cravenly chasing far right votes by ditching the green and digital policies the far right demonizes.

Simplification is deregulation on steroids for everything from tech to chemicals to finance. Much of the push comes from the Draghi report's timeworn mantra about cutting red tape. Conservatives, far right and even socialist leaders jumped on board, ignoring the good bits about pooling more funds.

Here @eurobriefing.bsky.social skirts a big EU innovation and industry story. Namely that von der Leyen is ripping apart the very policies that just a few years ago she and everyone else said was going to secure the EU's future. This U-turn is dubbed simplification. But that's euphemistic pap.
