Many issues here. One is equating dangers of today's far left with today's far right, which is off in terms of dangers to diverse communities in Europe. The far left can mestasize but last I checked (and I have) the security services of most member states are worried about the far right.

I think this line of argument is seeks to redefine a cordon sanitaire to the point of making it seem like it never actually existed.

We used to have standards about the political parties we did business with on the right. Times clearly have changed. But it's still important to mark these shifts honestly and publicly.

The busting of the cordon sanitaire is a big step towards the troubling dynamic you describe. I guess that's way cordons are there in the first place.

Either way, relying on the hard right majority does represent a sharp turn away from the previous prerogative of centrist majorities. Political scientists and historians have been warning about this for years now.

Historic. Commentators making parallels with early 1930s accommodation with Nazis. Long story short: conservatives combine with far right and neofascists to pass legislation. The vote was about business supply chains but will be remembered as another waypoint on the EU's lurch rightwards.

My 10 cents: Europe could do the innovation and even the military innovation talked about by @eurobriefing.bsky.social if only Europe would stick to its, well, guns. By then European leaders had succumbed to bullying by the likes of Vance, Musk, Meta and ExxonMobil out of fear Trump would further dial down security guarantees. The leaders were also cravenly chasing far right votes by ditching the green and digital policies the far right demonizes.

Simplification is deregulation on steroids for everything from tech to chemicals to finance. Much of the push comes from the Draghi report's timeworn mantra about cutting red tape. Conservatives, far right and even socialist leaders jumped on board, ignoring the good bits about pooling more funds.

Here @eurobriefing.bsky.social skirts a big EU innovation and industry story. Namely that von der Leyen is ripping apart the very policies that just a few years ago she and everyone else said was going to secure the EU's future. This U-turn is dubbed simplification. But that's euphemistic pap.
