The entire crux of the issue is that E3 slowly killed itself - not in amount of public showing up, but in terms of like, quality - and as companies started focusing on their own things, dorito pope saw dollar signs and started pushing it.

engaging with systems is always "this platforming feels like dogshit" or "you need to learn when to drop your shield" and never "some folks spent years figuring out how to make the ultimate weapon in the game and they wrote a rough guide on gamefaqs about it"

I feel like in terms of dealing with funky systems and trying to game the shit out of it, other games of the era did a better job and FFTA went on to be way wackier while FFTA2 reeled it back.

In terms of feeling like a sensible tactics game, tactics ogre had already done a better job.

I mean like DMs and shit because that's the only way to really discuss it at length without spoiling folks

So both games are highly repetitive, ZeroRanger because of a very difficult bottleneck you have to make through that asks a lot of you and Void Stranger because even when you figure out a lot of things you still have to play through a lot of levels again that add a ton of busywork to progress

LISA and Fear and Hunger are, I think, good examples of fucked up harrowing experiences because there are consequences and the difficulty is high but I feel like they're great games albeit not for everyone.

Those are still in the clear.
