Every 5x5 #nonogram is almost 90% complete. We're in the home stretch!
At the current rate, all 24,976,511 puzzles should be complete in about 10 days. Can we complete it earlier?

Thanks! I see it on github. Big fan of Downpour and the mission to make game creation more accessible. My daughter (10yo) is having fun making a game right now.
31.07.2025 21:05 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0@v21.bsky.social Question about Downpour: is html used internally when storing games/pages locally, or is just an export format? I'm working on a sticker book type app with some overlap with Downpour (images positioned on a page).
31.07.2025 20:42 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I'm working on a new app and thinking about #data portability. This got me thinking: what are the forever file formats? Say its 50-100 years in the future, what file types can we still open and access without a lot of headache? Probably .txt, pdf, png, jpeg. Anything else?
31.07.2025 16:09 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0No, I do not have any individual stats. I wanted to minimize data collection, though honestly, I just wrote the thing so quick I didn't think to keep track of stuff like that.
31.07.2025 15:50 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I only include puzzles that are line-solvable, that is can be solved by looking at each row and column in isolation. This prevents the need for trial-and-error and back-tracking strategies.
I go in some depth in my newsletter:
weekly.pixelogic.app/p/pixelogic-...
Sometimes the section completion lags behind a bit. It should resolve itself in under an hour (looks like 711 is marked complete now).
08.07.2025 00:00 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0What's more ridiculous than a web game where you collaborate to complete 25 million nonogram puzzles? A puzzle book!
"Every 5x5 Nonogram" is now available on Amazon. Volume 1 of a 4,995 volume series.

I illustrate some, and used to post somewhat regularly on instagram (www.instagram.com/joel.draws/), though these days it feels like I'm just feeding the image generation models.
Where do folks post their art these days? Mastodon, Bluesky, somewhere else?
Neat. My game "Every 5x5 Nonogram" was mentioned on @theverge.com in @davidpierce.xyz's Installer newsletter. I read The Verge every day so this is so cool!

Every 5x5 Nonogram website in dark mode
By popular request, Every 5x5 Nonogram now supports dark mode.

19.06.2025 04:45 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0More updates to Every 5x5 Nonogram:
โข Click and drag to fill multiple cells (mouse only)
โข Click the total solved count to see a graph of solve total over time
โข Some backend improvements
I'm going to take a break from features for a while. I'll be solving with the rest of you though!
I only include puzzles with a unique solution where no guessing or back tracking are needed, so you're right, it is a subset of every 5x5 pixel combination.
04.06.2025 00:39 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Interesting to see which sections have been completed first on #every5x5nonogram:
1-22: Working from the front
69: Well, you know
220: ???
420: Stoners
621: ???
999-1000: Working from the back
What section are you playing?
The ~25 million are all the puzzles that have unique solutions and can be solved without guessing or backtracking.
01.06.2025 09:29 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Just pushed a new update to the "Every 5x5 Nonogram" game:
โข Added a button to jump to the next unsolved puzzle, random puzzle, or specific puzzle by number.
โข Fix bug where sometimes the puzzle number displayed over clues
โข Fixed bug with janky scrolling and deep linking
>600k solved. So cool!
Thanks for letting me know. I'll try to have a fix today.
31.05.2025 13:19 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Yeah starting location is a random section. There are 1000 sections and 25k puzzles per section.
Ha yeah realtime puzzle progress would be next level. There actually may be a way to do it without a full rewrite. Hmm...
We're already at almost 70k puzzles solved and 980 online now, after launching "Every 5x5 Nonogram" this afternoon!
31.05.2025 00:55 โ ๐ 14 ๐ 3 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Maybe I can add a way to jump to where others are in your section. I'm also hoping people share their url with their friends, which should deep link to their location.
31.05.2025 00:50 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0I did have an interesting moment when I was solving puzzles in a random spot and saw someone else's highlight pop up next to me. We sort of collaborated, solving every other puzzle as we went down the list.
31.05.2025 00:49 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Thanks for the feedback (and the inspiration). And thanks for posting to hackernews, I added a comment.
I see your point about the activity. If someone else is working on a grid, you'll see a colored border around it, though its possible to end up in a "lonely" section.
Thanks! I pushed an update where you can right-click to X a square, if playing with a mouse.

Would love your feedback!
