Hereβs what bugs me most about the cogsci purist perspective on pedagogy: it largely ignores the affective side of teaching AND learning, which can entirely tank efforts to just tell Ss what they need to know. For first year/struggling Ts, that affective stuff is often central to overcoming barriers

I partially blame Bloomβs Taxonomy but the (misguided) belief that expertise, discernment, criticality etc. magically emerge from accumulating of lots of facts is basically treated as common sense & contributes to a lot of these dubious claims.

Even the notion of free floating βclear explanationsβ that you can βjust tell themβ is maddening to me β thereβs this set of universalist assumptions (rooted in EXTREMELY problematic first principles) underlying all of this discourse that fundamentally make it impossible to trust any of these ppl.

Exactly. My gripe with peopleβs focus on βevidence-based practicesβ is thereβs no such thing as context-free evidence. And the range of factors that can make implementing a strategy to fidelity ranges to accounting for disability to class size to βdid everyone eat this morning?β
That matters.

This piece is so smart! Please read it if you work in teaching the humanities or in curriculum development!

I agree, most students are not trying to cheat. Many students don't understand the benefits or the constraints of AI. I also do not want to police them for use. So here is my syllabus policy & we discuss in the first few weeks of class.

My latest: I wrote about my journey to put on 20 pounds of muscle as a woman.

Someone sent me a voice memo of their kid talking about one of my Bucket and Friends books.
There's all sorts of metrics and blahblahblah that will try to tell you if a book is successful or not, but man do they feel silly and small next to the voice of a young reader.
