Here’s what bugs me most about the cogsci purist perspective on pedagogy: it largely ignores the affective side of teaching AND learning, which can entirely tank efforts to just tell Ss what they need to know. For first year/struggling Ts, that affective stuff is often central to overcoming barriers

I partially blame Bloom’s Taxonomy but the (misguided) belief that expertise, discernment, criticality etc. magically emerge from accumulating of lots of facts is basically treated as common sense & contributes to a lot of these dubious claims.

Even the notion of free floating β€œclear explanations” that you can β€œjust tell them” is maddening to me β€” there’s this set of universalist assumptions (rooted in EXTREMELY problematic first principles) underlying all of this discourse that fundamentally make it impossible to trust any of these ppl.

Exactly. My gripe with people’s focus on β€œevidence-based practices” is there’s no such thing as context-free evidence. And the range of factors that can make implementing a strategy to fidelity ranges to accounting for disability to class size to β€œdid everyone eat this morning?”

That matters.

This piece is so smart! Please read it if you work in teaching the humanities or in curriculum development!

It frames the topic on AI in such an important way that’s about things much deeper and older than AI. Thanks @mraleosays.bsky.social for always making me think!

I agree, most students are not trying to cheat. Many students don't understand the benefits or the constraints of AI. I also do not want to police them for use. So here is my syllabus policy & we discuss in the first few weeks of class.

Please feel free to use, adapt & share, just cite!

Opinion | I gained 20 pounds of muscle. Here’s what I learned. Three years and 20 pounds of muscle later, I’ve learned that everything β€” and nothing β€” changes.

My latest: I wrote about my journey to put on 20 pounds of muscle as a woman.

And how my life changed because of strength training/bodybuilding.

Someone sent me a voice memo of their kid talking about one of my Bucket and Friends books.

There's all sorts of metrics and blahblahblah that will try to tell you if a book is successful or not, but man do they feel silly and small next to the voice of a young reader.

PSA for Millennials: new advice is that HRT can begin in early perimenopause. I had my first big hot flash when I was 39 - I'll be 48 in a week.

The case by @mattrkay.bsky.social in this conversation: never more than now have classroom discussions been needed, in both quantity and quality.

(And that quantity and quality? Not an easy thing.)

Few people actually read and STUDY Black women intellectual's work or take it seriously. I believe if they did, their work would be much better.

The conversations about love, relationships, ABUNDANCE etc... are all theorized in Black feminist scholarship.

Things I’ve learned teaching a 4 week summer course at a community college

1) β€˜Velcro children’ can be grown & can attach in 4 weeks
2) all students act like you’ve never taught them anything when a paper’s due
3) differentiation is THE KEY
4) I’m an exceptional educator
5) I love teaching

3 Ways to Integrate SEL Into Classroom Practices Highlighting and modeling SEL practices can help teachers create an environment where disruptive behaviors are minimized.

As many of us return to the classroom, I thought this Edutopia article I wrote was worth sharing again: 3 Ways to Integrate SEL Into Classroom Practices. πŸ’š

SEL isn’t extraβ€”it’s essential.

I OVERstand why @marcusluther.bsky.social loves this so much.

MY GOODNESS, how this poem reminds me of being a teacher.

β€œuntil I yank the leash back to save her because / I want her to survive forever. Don’t die, I say.”

So much hope and heart and hurt in this poem.

Did you know that I wrote some books for teachers and you should read them? I wrote them as a call to take action and transform schools with mental health and wellbeing in mind. I'd love if you checked them out.

I leaned hard into this shift last year, like The Bear’s β€œEvery second counts.” Rearranging and revising how we used classroom time was a fun puzzle for me and allowed me to model making mistakes and for us to discuss the relationship between time, process, and struggle. Like writing! 😁

Really interesting convo here about SEL and how to best use our expertise as educators to support stress tolerance. This falls squarely within what I’ve been doing as an administrator …and a key point made: SEL should be more about building a disposition for educators than a set of lessons for Ss.
