Prince William has paid an emotional tribute to his wife on her 43rd birthday after a difficult year in which she has undergone cancer treatment. The previously unseen photo was taken by Matt Porteous in Windsor last summer.

Edward the Confessor, last English king of the House of Wessex, died in London on 5 January 1066. He was called ‘the Confessor’ because of his piety. He died childless, sparking a succession crisis that led to the defeat of his successor King Harold Godwinson by William the Conqueror.

The Palace of Whitehall, one of the principal royal residences, was largely destroyed by fire on 4 January 1698. The Banqueting House is the only structure that survived the fire.
