Bugbears in the Waiting Room: Revisiting Arber and Sawyer's Classic Study of GP Reception Work Using Ethnography in Eight English General Practices In 1985, Arber and Sawyer described the discretionary rationing power of general practice receptionists. HandScan criteria versus ACR/EULAR Boolean remission as treatment target in early rheumatoid arthritis: results of a randomized controlled trial AbstractObjectives. The HandScan is a novel method to quickly and objectively quantify RA disease activity using optical spectral transmission in hands and

🚫New RCT highlights what not to do in clinical practice. Using a fancy HandScan to guide therapy was less effective than standard care.

πŸ”The study also revealed high non-adherence highlighting real-world challenges of rigid treat-to-target protocols.

Let’s ask the patient: disease prediction based on patients’ symptom descriptions in free text AbstractObjective. This study evaluates the value self-reported free-text symptom descriptions for supporting diagnostic decisions in osteoarthritis (OA),

AI and NLP analysed >8,400 patient-written free-text symptom descriptions.

Clinically relevant patterns helped distinguish #osteoarthritis, #fibromyalgia and immune-mediated rheumatic diseases.

This may reduce misdiagnosis and support earlier triage.

Ooh - my new paper on case study is out! What’s a case study, how do you do one, how do you spot a good one? Includes niche examples like the REF impact case study (though it’s mainly about research case studies).

I took paracetamol in both my pregnancies for minor joint troubles. I had a better pregnancy experience because I wasn't in pain. Neither of my kids is autistic. The high-quality studies and reviews confirm there is NO evidence that paracetamol taken by the mother causes autism in the child. πŸ§ͺ

Trump attacks Tylenol as officials unveil highly contentious conclusions on autism President says acetaminophen – also known as paracetamol - increases risk when taken by pregnant women, assertion contradicted by research

Please know that this is Trump scaremongering.

There is no good scientific evidence linking paracetamol (Tylenol) to autism.

A 2024 Swedish study of 2.4 million births found no relationship whatsoever between exposure to paracetamol in utero & subsequent autism.
