As a professor it is her obligation to speak out for the truth as she sees it - that is literally her job - it is irrelevant who agrees or disagrees with her views so long as they are expressed without violence. What Trump has done to our country, and to academic freedom, is horrible.

Trump will systematically put his high ranking officers in a position where they must either commit a war crime (like Bradley) or resign (like Holsey). Either way, the top ranks of the military will soon be populated by those who can be blackmailed into obedience with the threat of court-martial.

When you have a lunatic in charge is it better to have them awake at the wheel or asleep at the wheel. Recognizing that neither option is very good is informative - the only remedy is to get him away from the wheel altogether -impeach, convict, remove, try, imprison.

but we would need some sort of vetting body that would assure minimal legal qualifications prior to a person standing for election. We have the sad experience of seeing and feeling the effects of allowing patently unqualified people to run for office and then appoint more unqualified people.

SCOTUS no longer sees the need for internally consistent logic. They have given up trying to rule based even on their own view of what the law is, and the current measuring stick is solely whether an outcome is or is not favored by Trump. We no longer have a functioning judiciary at the top.

I had a conversation recently with someone who was still on X. They were well educated, self-confident, pleasant to look at, with a welcoming smile. Out of their mouth came a stream of far-right talking points, presented as provocations. They would never accept that they have been radicalised, or that their frame for the world is now provided by the far-right. But that is what has happened. The thing which has truly upset me this year is not the actions of people like Musk or Trump. We already knew that there are terrible people in the world. It’s how much compliance there is from people who should damn well know better. Marie Le Conte wrote brilliantly about this recently - the mortifying spectacle of perfectly likeable people obediently accepting racism and extremism because it would be inconvenient for them to do otherwise.
