Of course you can fail at writing cool ahead of time too, but it's been so prominent in my main game as of late that I can't ignore it.

Shadowlands was the cumulative result of several expansions rule-of-cooling with no forward thought. "Wouldn't it be cool if X" gave us "what sword?" and Sylvanas suddenly having death blasts to kill Saurfang. You can plan cool too, but knee-jerking coolness can have long-felt ripples going forward.

I'm watching the newest Adventuring Academy and the "rule of cool: yay or nay" segment is right up my alley. As a warcraft player, the rule of cool can absolutely be disastrous. The entirety of WoD was rule of cool and it has had zero lasting impact.
