I imagine social media also leaves people feeling like they're doing something useful when they probably aren't. Posting in outrage can leach a lot of energy that could be used to properly mobilise. It's like signing a petition and imagining the job's done.

It's spiritually corrosive watching 'leaders' do nothing, leaving many unable to grasp their own agency. Plenty of us lost faith in the people in charge a long time ago, but others are only just starting to process all this. Collective shock is probably a part of it.

Guess how many articles about this topic have been written in 2025, since Trump started demanding political retribution against universities who taught the wrong thing or allowed students to protest the wrong thing
