The Finch Interested Me | Donovan Hohn In memory of Lewis H. Lapham.

โ€œLewis hoped his namesake magazine would survive him. These Founding Fathers Were Frenemies. Maybe We Can Learn Something.

Great to see Monticello's work featured in the New York Times today.

"Monticello is asking a question: Can leaning into the messy, complicated, nasty, origins of our partisan political system save us?"

Opinion | LeBron James, father and son As his incomparable career enters another transition, King James places fatherhood front and center.

"LeBronโ€™s coming of age as a father who grew up without one himself is the most compelling part of this story. No one hands you the bible of fatherhood when you become one; there is no Fatherhood University at which you can earn an advanced degree."

The Declaration of Independence and Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson wrote the first draft of the Declaration of Independence, which he considered one of his three greatest achievements.

Now is a good time to remind folks about the Declaration of Independence.

Historians occasionally make fun of Jefferson for alleging that some Americans wanted a king, or something like a king. That strain of thinking was real and, apparently, never went away.

Johnson attributes prayer to Thomas Jefferson, but thereโ€™s no proof he said it According to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, thereโ€™s no evidence that the third president of the United States ever recited a prayer for the nation, as Mike Johnson suggested.

There's a page on Monticello's website about this particular spurious quote.

Lewis H. Lapham, Harperโ€™s Editor and Piercing Columnist, Dies at 89 Born into a patrician family, he used Harperโ€™s and later his own Laphamโ€™s Quarterly to denounce what he saw as the hypocrisies and injustices of a spoiled United States.

Lapham was memorialized as one of the New York Times' "notable deaths" of 2024.
