Trashing our oceans: Feds plan the biggest permitted coral destruction in U.S. history Floridians are raising questions about a U.S. Army Corps plan to blast and dredge Fort Lauderdale's port β€” and smother more than 200 acres of sea floor and rare corals.

The Army Corps is planning to blast and dredge Fort Lauderdale’s port – home to the most significant stands of staghorn coral and Queen conch left in the continental U.S. This would smother more than 200 acres of sea floor and rare corals.

China's last emperor, Puyi, was crowned #OnThisDay in AD 1908, aged just 2

The first emperor, Qin Shihuang, is buried at Xi'an. His mausoleum is best-known for the terracotta warriors, but even the wood in its construction likely held symbolic importance

Neat post-1895 soda fountain from R M Greene Co. Green first demonstrated the "ice cream soda" at the Franklin Institute fair in Philly in 1874. This one was abandoned in an old drugstore in Fernandina Beach, FL and is now in the museum there. Coca Cola used fresh coca leaves until 1903.

A coastal plant that we don't see in the Northeast. Sea oats are salt-tolerant grasses that are so important for dune formation & stabilization that it's illegal to pick them in Florida. They were eaten, but I wonder how important they were for Indigenous peoples in the Southeast in the past. 🌎

Can culture and heritage be catalysts for climate resilience? Cultural heritage and local knowledge can be powerful levers for climate resilience and should be embedded into policies, planning and finance.

β€˜I have watched politicians failing yet and yet again’: lessons from a life as an environment writer Paul Brown looks back at his career reporting on the climate crisis, failed summit and nuclear power – and how to do it well

Very sad to hear that Paul Brown is ill. He has been one of the most enterprising and important UK environmental reporters during my whole career, from the Thatcher days when I was at FoE working on acid rain and the ozone hole.

The myth of Thanksgiving is as American as it is wrong Every year, we tell the mythical story of the first Thanksgiving so we can ignore the obvious truth that this land was taken not by friendship, but by violence.

Good reading from @rebeccanagle.bsky.social. A moving reflection on how we got to where we are, what it cost and still costs, to create memories that are comfortable for some. As a newly-minted citizen I’ll take this as my Thanksgiving meditation. πŸ¦ƒ

Sea level doesn’t rise at the same rate everywhere – we mapped where Antarctica’s ice melt would have the biggest impact Understanding what happens to Antarctica’s ice matters, because as it melts, sea levels rise, affecting lives and economies around the world.

In a piece for @us.theconversation.com, Shaina Sadai @scienceshaina.bsky.social and I wrote about the sea level projections in our new paper. The focus here is on explaining how melting Antarctic ice sheets lead to regional differences in SLR. Paper linked below. theconversation.com/sea-level-do...
