Around 100 years prior, Rome crucified about 100 pharisees to keep the people subjugated. The religious leaders definitely have blame but so does Rome. And theologically we all put him there.

I believe it is speaking to living in fear and an almost deist view that God doesn't care. God doesn't protect in ways we like but we trust in the God who raises the dead....or its more about that we don't fear God because love has cast out that fear. Maybe... I could be off the mark. Good question!
