I’m enjoying “First Up Football”, the daily soccer news podcast hosted by @sammyjames.bsky.social. This is the spiritual inheritor to the much missed “early kickoff.” 10 minutes long, out before I walk dogs, informative, fun.

I’m still scarred from the time I took my son to a nats game, we did park and ride at west falls church… and the metro was out of service that day, but it wasn’t clear where or how the service picked up. 4.5 stressful hours to get to the park. 🤡😀

Thank you, Sammy! I have downloaded the first episode, and will listen along with tomorrow’s episode, tomorrow morning! Loved listening to you while I walk my dog at 6:30 each morning here in Virginia.

I need to go. It certainly looked impressive last week! It’s closest too me, but honestly I’d rather fly across the continent than fight the traffic and parking to get through DC. 🤷‍♀️

Grrrr. By the time they stop condescendingly marveling at how such a young girl could be doing such grown up soccer things, they’ll be passive-aggressively wondering whether she should be hanging up the boots in retirement yet. Oy.

The best NWSL stadiums behind Providence that I've been to are KC Current and Bay FC. Both are new with amazing sight lines, good concessions with a beautiful area to eat the concessions, and cozy atmosphere. The march to KC along the river reminds me of walking to Craven Cottage along the Thames.

Okay, that was fun. Thorns 4, Reign 2. Wish I could have been there. Only so many times I can fly across the continent though. When physics teachers make exec money, I suppose. Think I can watch next week, anyway. Woo! #BAONPDX

Could not see which Thorn towered above the rest to head that ball away in the box. It was as if she were being thrown upward in a rugby lineout, she got so high. #BAONPDX

Dammit, we *almost* made it without a Moultrie age reference! 83 minutes in, and "Olivia Moultrie, the 19 year old". As she subbed out! We were almost there! Eurydice has turned into pillar of salt. #BAONPDX

Why was the broadcast showing an extended shot of Turner switching positions, when the crowd was applauding Tordin as she subbed out? Weird. #BAONPDX

Turner put that right on Tordin's mellon. Tordin squirmed like a salmon to try to get that directed right. Almost! #BAONPDX

Seattle: Fishlock, Fishel, and a refusal to throw fish at Pike's Place Market.

The Reign weren't in town when I was there, so I saw the men's team. The supporters were wonderfully engaged, knowledgeable, exciting. The introduction with drums was fantastic. The stadium itself - it's fine. Nothing special. Providence Park is *special*. #BAONPDX

Yes - easy to get to on the train! But Lumen is a sterile structure, a ten minute walk from the train stop through a concrete jungle. Providence is in a residential neighborhood, a 30-second walk from the train, and has serious character. One of the best venues I've watched a game from. #BAONPDX

*Dammit*, CBS. You had an entire halftime if you had wanted to interview Rapinoe. But you put her on during gameplay. If you want her to be your color commentator, go ahead and sack Lindsey and put her on. But I tuned in to watch this here game, not an interview. #BAONPDX

I once went straight from school to broadcast a soccer game in full coat and tie. It was 100 degrees. I did not feel right changing, 'cause all *I* had to do was sit there and talk. Felt bad for the players. Spilled pizza on my coat after, but it needed the dry cleaner anyway. 🤷 #BAONPDX

In Seattle, the stadium is way away from town, and is characterless. Pike's Place Market disappointed me greatly. I mean, I and a bunch of other tourists came to see people throwing large fish. I have been there three different times, and never once did anyone throw a fish. #BAONPDX

So, Seattle. I live in VA, so I don't have the same rivalry-infused prejudice as most Thorns fans. I mean, both cities smell like pot smoke. But Portland's stadium in the heart of town, Washington Park, Powell's Books, and the market by the river totally live up to expectations. #BAONPDX
