Is the death of anyone, especially if his killing was politically motivated, a tragedy? Absolutely. No one should fear for speaking their mind.
Is there anything those of us outside the US can stop what’s coming next?
Nope. Self-immolation in progress. Best we can do is stand back and watch.

Anyone know a good tailor in the St. John’s area? I am 6’7 and finding a good suit that doesn’t make me look ancient is hard.

Time to take the gloves off on this - we were all collectively biting our tongue towards the Americans, but that regime (and I use that word advisably) just keeps descending deeper.
Sell the bonds. Bully border governors who need our tourism. Tax energy trade. Go primal on these clowns.

So fund that in conjunction.
Or, at the very minimum, twin the TCH across NL, and introduce HFR in Atlantic

So the other third aren’t deserving of equal access to transit?
Not to mention the fact that the resource extraction from the “rest of the country combined” generates the wealth to sustain the Laurentian population?
Tsk tsk… elitist

I hear your point.
I’m being a bit more optimistic - chicken before the egg scenario. More capital investments = more good paying jobs = more successful companies = more private-public cooperation on research
Saw that play out here in NL in the 90s with the offshore boom & MUN

Could be dead wrong on that last point about grants going up - just basing that on what my fellow graduates are up to
Off the cuff, of a grad class of about 200, at least 20 are going into grad school and got their funding long before any of us poor schmucks landed full time jobs

Implosion or shift in focus? Government priority isn’t necessarily pie in my (limited) experience - just bc they’re going hell for leather on one doesn’t mean the legs are getting kicked out from NRCAN, MITACS etc
Anecdotally the number of research grants being issued is actually going up lately

Respectfully - as a new engineering graduate - is there not a limit to what education and research can do when individuals cannot take advantage of the skills they’ve worked so hard to acquire due to lack of new capital projects and investments?
Surely the two can (and should) go hand in hand

Fifth, and finally,
Who is served by lashing out at our own party leadership; the same people who brought us from 3rd place to 1st?
Canadians wanted change. Carney & the new Ministry represents that change. It’s tough to swallow for some, but that’s the water on the beans.

Fourth, pundits are also quick to forget that this fella was Mayor during the 2010 Olympics. No small logistical feat. I’m bullish on Robertson in no small part thanks to this.
13.05.2025 20:38 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
Third, pundits are quick to look at Robertson’s record on Vancouver housing, and claim he’s a NIMBY. I think that’s misplaced - a lot of it was out of his hands, especially when it comes to foreign speculators. Course corrections on that came after his tenure as mayor.

Second, the Feds’ involvement in housing is limited, tho their role in it is (correctly) increasing. It does come down ultimately to individual municipalities, and how they integrate within the fed & prov frameworks. Having someone who knows that relationship is critical.

First, NES had very little to do with the announcements he made while in charge. I know that might be harsh, but a lot of it was announcements - all sizzle, little steak. Not to discredit NES’s ability & political future - but he’s not as much an asset as an ex-Mayor in this slimmed down cabinet. 2/

Many of the more left-leaning / youth wings are upset that NES got swapped out in favour of Robertson in this cabinet. As someone who identifies as both of those things, let me explain why I think that anger is misplaced… 1/

Also important to note the “whole new generation of cons” thing doesn’t include many young women. It isn’t a win if you’ve managed to alienate my particular demographic because you decided to court the incel vote lmao

Anger is NEVER constructive; it only opens folks up to being taken advantage of. This is such a key reason of why we as young Liberals gotta keep the good fight up - we can’t let people get taken for a ride by the nefariousness of the noveau conservatives

The generation they hedge their bets on is mine - young people males aged 18-35. Many of my friends swung towards the CPC bc they mistrusted the Liberals under Trudeau.
Anecdotally, Carney’s leadership gave about 80% of them pause, and they came back to us.
They want results. We’ll deliver.

I don’t buy the “Pierre has brought in a whole new generation of Cons” line. They’re smoking their own stash.
There’s just a latent mistrust of us Liberals bc of the tail end of Trudeau. I suspect that’ll recede once Carney starts delivering (tax cut, home building, etc)

We can heal those divisions, to be honest. There’s a lot of hostility, but we can kick the legs out from under it with goodwill, equalization reform & energy projects.
Pretty good gig for NL too, tbh. Our Liberals can & will do good work, hopefully fast. That will blunt their attacks.

Of note as well; it is likely the CPC keeps Poillievre on. Mostly because they have a chokehold on the party. Whittle away at their support by executing on our plans & making life easier for Canadians. We have a plan. They didn’t. Let’s use our executive competence & outperform our last 9 years.

Good listen.
We won the election, but the work begins today. You look at our demographic - young people aged 18-35 - and it went to the CPC. The mock vote in schools was a CPC minority.
We can win these votes back. Let’s get working & win our brothers and sisters back.
