Cherry plums seem to be having a prolific year. I've seen lots fallen at the edges of major roads while travelling today. Sadly, in places too dangerous for anyone to pick. The birds will enjoy them. But could this fruit bounty be connected to the three road-killed badgers I've also seen?

The same level of care would work for rare lichens during roof maintainable work. Could something similar be possible for rare organisms living on thatch?

Why do treehoppers look so weird?! Our latest paper, out this week in @pnas.org, suggests a perhaps unexpected reason - static electricity ⚑ We show that treehoppers can detect the electrostatic cues of predators and that their crazy shapes may boost their electrosensitivity! doi.org/10.1073/pnas...

It's always hard to remember how important this is. But use a new blade and it reminds you! So much easier to make thin and even sections with a fresh blade.

(Equal growth-rates in two lichens would produce a more-or-less straight line.) I doubt if you would find any thallus overgrowing another thallus if you sectioned the boundary line. But happy to be proved wrong!

07.06.2025 16:37 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

I'm guessing that these two lichens were expanded theri roughly circular thalli and they first met at the angle of their present shared boundary. After that the Ochrolechia parella, appears to have grown faster than the Circinaria calcarea resulting in the bent line.
