Two decades of bacterial ecology and evolution in a freshwater lake - Nature Microbiology
A 471-metagenome time series from Lake Mendota in Wisconsin, USA, reveals seasonal and decadal shifts in bacterial functional and ecological dynamics, especially in response to environmental extremes.
Today is the one-year anniversary of finishing my recent @naturemicrobiol.bsky.social paper's final draft ๐. It is also my son's 1st birthday ๐ฃ. Seems like a good time for an explainer thread! (1/n)

Unravelling viral ecology and evolution over 20โyears in a freshwater lake - Nature Microbiology
A long-term metagenomic time series reveals how viruses impact diversity, ecological dynamics and evolution of freshwater microbiomes.
New paper alert: Our 20-year study of viral ecology and evolution reveals viral roles in microbial dynamics, phage genome evolution over time, and key interactions with hosts. A big thank you to our awesome collaborators @quendi.bsky.social @archaeal.bsky.social

After 24 years of work, Iโm thrilled to announce the TYMEFLIES dataset, which comprises metagenomes from Lake Mendota (Madison, WI), collected roughly every 10 days (471 samples) for 20 years! @quendi.bsky.social @robinrohwer.bsky.social

Got to visit the Cedar Creek LTER this week! I jumped at the chance to contribute to their chronolog of this spot by Fish Lakeโyou can never have too many lake photos! Now home to @ntl-lter.bsky.social

LTER sites, including us, make our data publicly available and LOVE IT when other researchers use the data!
PLEASE CITE THE DATA! That's how we can track use and demonstrate to our funders that the dollars are well spent (allowing us to collect more data for you to use!)

map of Wisconsin waters with the 11 core NTL LTER lakes highlighted
NTL LTER samples 11 lakes year round and the data are publicly available! Seven lakes are in northern WI and have been monitored since 1981. The other four lakes are in southern WI and have been monitored since 1995 (although some records are 100+ yrs!)
