I'm a staff engineer so my two routes are: "Slightly higher paid even more specialized engineer" AKA someone making close to a half mil to just be an IC and as high as our bands/roles go for the track, or to go into a director of eng level role for an entire product team and be executive tracked.

Yeah, highly depends on mgmt competence. My company knows that the staff people are the ones who will effectively use these things best and is hesitant about slop etc. But many places won't be.

Thankfully at my job they are parallel ladders and people have moved between director/staff level roles. But yeah, I am kind of planning towards the director/mgmt route and it will be less fun to not code but also I need another skill after 13 years a developer.

When the comp looks like this its easy to worry though
