A timely study shows how bus service reductions harm seniors:

"People could not reach their usual range of destinations, travelled less often, and felt a sense of entrapment in their homes...People experienced a loss of freedom, independence, and control over their lives."

Stop visualizing heatwaves with sunbathers and beachgoers! On the dangers of media portraying heatwaves as fun days in the sun.

Thanks Climate Psyched for a great blog!

"In a content analysis of media images from the 2021 Heat Dome in Canada, a research group found that out of 845 analyzed images, only 16% implied that #heat, in fact, is something dangerous."

A graphic titled "10 Guidelines for Effective Extreme Heat Visuals: How to portray extreme heat as a serious threat." The image includes a list of 10 numbered guidelines in alternating yellow and red boxes, alongside a greyscale photo of a person pouring water over their head to cool off. The 10 guidelines are:

Avoid visuals that downplay the danger. (Extreme heat is the deadliest climate event.)

Beyond a weather story. (Show how heat impacts health, transportation, and work.)

Creating heat visuals is challenging. (Focus on those most affected, such as female outdoor workers.)

Portray impacts for average people. (Capture everyday impacts of extreme heat.)

Show both the impacts and solutions. (Combine images of heat with visuals of cooling solutions.)

Tailor heat visuals to your audience. (By highlighting their specific challenges and potential solutions.)

Rethink when to shoot. (Heat is a 24-hour story.)

Build sources and plan ahead. (To secure access to key information when a heatwave hits.)

Stay safe while working in extreme heat. (Take breaks, hydrate, wear cool clothing, and monitor your well-being.)

Think about your equipment. (Protect your equipment from the blazing sun.)

The visual uses warm colours to reflect the theme and emphasise urgency.

A graphic titled β€œ7 core principles for climate change communication” from Climate Visuals. The layout features seven principles accompanied by simple turquoise line icons. The principles are:

Show real people (icon of a person outline).

Tell new stories (icon of an open book).

Show climate change causes at scale (icon of factories and trees).

Show emotionally powerful impacts (icon of two people comforting each other).

Understand your audience (icon of a group of people).

Show local (but serious) impacts (icon of a map with a location pin).

Be careful with protest imagery (icon of a person pointing at a chart).

The graphic is clean and minimalist, using soft tones and icons to visually reinforce each principle.

Stunning. May was brutal for Trump in federal court: 96% loss rate βš–οΈ. Even GOP-appointed judges have ruled against the admin 72% of the time. District courts are doing their job defending the Constitution. Soon the Supreme Court may be the only court unwilling to defend the rule of law.
