I hope everyone who believes that matters supports the laid off Post writers and editors however they need in whatever comes next.

If major media institutions won't build or properly invest in thoughtful sports coverage -- especially when it considers and holds power accountable -- we need to do what WaPo won't. (I'm trying to do that, too, upping my paid subscriptions to indie media while building my own platform.)

There are so many ripe stories, and so few places who value it because they see sport as something less than, other. It's not. Every TikTok-viral conspiracy strongly implies there's an audience for a deeply reported or well-researched alternative.

And in a media environment where everything is owned by gambling companies, rightsholders, the billion-dollar leagues itself, or some amalgam of the the above, you have a chance to distinguish your publication with critical and clever sportswriting that is truly independent from institutional power.

If an important subject is too wonky, too dour, too niche, smart journalists and editors should at least be open if not actively pursue sports angles to maximize attention, which benefits every other part of the newsroom.

Beyond the perpetual interest in as an entertainment product worthy of good coverage in its own right, sports can draw people to consider the world beyond the box score. Race, gender, health, money, politics, fill in the blank: all of it intersects, eventually, with who won the game.

the Washington Post layoffs are awful in every regard. I am under no pretense that Trump-glazing collateral damage was intended as an intelligent biz decision. However, I want to address closing its sports desk.

If you want to do journalism that gets eyeballs, sports is the LAST desk to close.
