This is a fun discussion. You get better with experience, specially working on a franchise that has a specific look. My first armor set in Destiny required 20+ sketches, now It takes 2 or 3. You gain insight on the AD’s taste & trust on your coworkers with time. Young artists, trust your instincts.

If an armor plate has a bit more complex compound forms I add rendering.

I prefer loose concepts and let the 3D artists pour their talent to complete and re interpret the concepts.

I’m also caring for an elder relative by doing art. I’m glad to read you also feel proud to use your talent to care for your family.

It does suck to spend years on something the public will never see.
I find comfort in remembering the moments were we share initial pitches for features, narratives or visuals. Also, being in awe at the talent of game devs solving problems together and coming up with crazy left field results.

We had one stuck in our attic years ago. I wore gardening gloves since these guys can scratch and are pretty beefy and feisty. Glad you can care for it while it recoups.

For animation & VG. What I try to encourage students is to include their life experience and preferences into their work. How they see the world. If they are trying to land a job, that's different discussion (clarity in visuals & production could take priority).
