Finally got to see The Librarians last night! Thanks to @letutahread.bsky.social and @txfreedomread.bsky.social for an amazing event. I don't have any pictures, but I'm grateful to have been in community with so many kind people who've inspired my work fighting book bans in Davis School District.

I feel this in my bones.

Since that isn't likely to happen any time soon in real life, I'm at least glad there's Vibe Check. There's so much to love about this podcast, but Saeed's poetry recommendations are always a highlight.

I had a stress dream last night in which I realized I never actually graduated college and had to go back to take more classes. But lucky for me, I got to take a poetry seminar from @theferocity.bsky.social. As someone who was traumatized by my college poetry class, the very thought is healing.

I came away from that talk with a deeper understanding of what it means to colonize open source materials and how harmful that is. It opened my eyes to so many issues. It stinks that students (who are adults! that can think for themselves!) can’t hear those voices and perspectives, too.

But more than that, I hate how broadly some universities are interpreting it. In talking with professors, it’s definitely having a chilling affect in all sorts of disciplines. I went to a different event where a professor talked about being prohibited from talking about their culture’s tattoos.

It’s so frustrating. They told us we couldn’t criticize the Utah legislature or HB261 or Utah’s book banning law. My presentation was all about combatting book bans in K-12 schools and how they’re unconstitutional. Even if I’d wanted to, it would have been impossible to comply.

Last month, Weber State University cancelled a conference *on censorship* after it became clear that all of the presenters (including me) would have to censor their material to comply with HB 261. I applaud your integrity and am here to commiserate—it’s a terrible law with terrible consequences.

“Mama, when will you teach me to COOK?” groused the three year old, as if she’s already asked me a thousand times.

(This is the first time she’s asked me this question.)

I second the recommendations for Mysterium! My family is also obsessed with Shadows over Camelot. It’s out of print, but if you can find a copy, it’s worth it.
