A bit like spiralling publication costs we need to start having a proper discussion around lab equipment servicing costs. These are often completely disproportionate to the cost of instrument and the service that is provided and seem to serve as a cash cow for vendors.

Horisberger et al separate Lupus nephritis patients in 3 groups by blood:
healthy-like, interferon-dominant and CD8 T cell-dominant.
The CD8 T cell-dominant group had the highest biopsy activity score and highest response rate after 1 year; the healthy-like the most chronic damage. ๐Ÿงช โ‘‚ #NephSky

Bittersweet farewell weeks at @kiroxford.bsky.social, a place pivotal to my growth as an independent scientist. With deep gratitude for this chapter, I'm thrilled to begin the next at @unibas.ch @biomedizin.unibas.ch, where my lab will study organelle inheritance in T cells in the context of ageing.

In diabetic retinopathy, microvascular damage & inflammation disrupt the blood-retina barrier, but the role of microglia was unclear

Thomas Langmann & team now show suppression of microglia-driven inflammatory responses preserves retinal integrity.

The source of dietary fat influences anti-tumour immunity in obese mice - Nature Metabolism This study shows that animal-based high-fat diets accelerate tumour growth and impair anti-tumour response to melanoma in obese mice, whereas plant-based high-fat diets do not.

This was a labor of love requiring lots of teamwork over years, repeating in 3 locations! Thanks to all the lab over the years, giving their time generously to this team project, & our wonderful collaborators. The source of fat matters for anti-tumor immunity ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ–๐Ÿงˆ๐ŸŒด๐Ÿซ’๐Ÿฅฅ

MAIT cells exacerbate colonic inflammation in a genetically diverse murine model of spontaneous colitis IL-17-producing lymphocytes are involved in both tissue repair and the propagation of inflammation, with their effects highly context-dependent. Mucosal-Associated-Invariant-T-cells (MAIT), a subset of innate-like T cells with features of both Th1 and Th17 lineages, are increasingly recognized for their roles in mucosal immunity. Here, we identified the Collaborative-Cross CC011/Unc strain, which spontaneously develops chronic colitis, as being enriched for MAIT cells. This expansion coincides with an age-related loss of intestinal barrier permeability and colonic inflammation.
