You're not wrong, but isn't retooling your party just JRPGs in general? I had to do this repeatedly to beat Metaphor Refantazio. It was an equally enjoyable and frustrating 108 hours. I guess my enjoyment of FFT comes from the team building not the completion. I haven't beat an FFT game yet!

That is a straight up Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Batman 1989 reference. I know the timeline is tight since this is a 1989 game (in Japan) but there could have been promotional stills in magazines during the development period. Can anyone back me up on this pet theory?

Ha! In all honesty, you probably don't need any of them. You can emulate retro games easily on phones and there are some nice bluetooth controllers out there. Or you can listen to Daniel and stick to one device. Most of them can handle anything up to PS1 games easily.

Earthdawn is one of my favourite TTRPGs that I first played in the 90s, so around the same time that I was originally playing Earthbound. I guess that they're forever tied together as good "Earth" games in my mind.

CORRECTION: In our latest Canadian Thanksgiving episode I referred to "Earthbound" (Mother 2) as "Earthdawn." That's a huge mistake on my part. My bad!

I played this as S.O.S. on the SNES. So memorable! What a delightful use of Mode-7 graphics to flip the ship around. This felt more on-theme than when it was used in Super Metroid or Super Castlevania IV.

Ivalice Chronicles is also just as addictive since grinding is on demand. I was wrong when I told you that random battles are disabled by default. But you no longer have to rely exclusively on random battles. I wish they didn't hide the ability customization UI behind the equipment menu!

War of the Lions is really solid! Despite Ivalice Chronicles many improvements I kinda miss WotL's animated cut scenes.

I only owned a few JPN SNES and GB games back in the day. I don't recall them being so bulky. I think the big Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy manuals were just for the West. Now, Japan has a serious tradition of deluxe printed game guides though. Like the Mario 64 one with hand made dioramas!

Square Soft definitely lacked faith in the English speaking console gaming audience. Ironic since PC RPGs were so entrenched in the West. It was a separate publisher at that point but Enix had to give Dragon Warrior (Dragon Quest 1) away with a Nintendo Power subscription.

If the EA and Microsoft news has you dissilliusioned about games, there are plenty of independant creators out there. We explored our local design scene at the Vancouver Game Garden but encourage everyone to dig around and find similar community initiatives in your own cities.

It's like M$ is trying to make every possible mistake. Complicity in genocide, enriching TERFs, Kushner and Saudi Wealth fund, console and game pass price hikes, shuttering studios and laying off thousands of devs, exclusives on PS... I've been an Xbox fan for 24 years but it's officially over!
