Trump Attack on Intel’s C.E.O. Could Compound Factory Struggles

New work for @nytimes.com

Trump’s ongoing attacks on Intel CEO combine with market headwinds, threatening further delays on potential $100 billion project. I spent some time back in January documenting the construction and massive power and infrastructure investments in the area.

New work for @wsj.com β€” I photographed and filmed a robot unloading boxes at a DHL shipping facility. Its calm, effortless efficiency could signal a sea change for this once human-centric occupation.

It’s time to change the way the media reports on protests. Here are some ideas. "People kept sharing these videos that were coming up and it was unambiguous what was going on. We weren't looking at a stream of videos of violence erupting or clashes breaking out. We were looking a...

It’s sometimes hard to see in the moment but when you take a step back and see the depth and breadth of your own work over time, it can be just the kind of reminder you need to push through difficult times in this beautiful, brutal, and rapidly changing industry.

It’s a good reminder that the more you work at this, and the deeper you dive into the work, the better it will be.

Lastly, for me, digging through my archive shows me both how far I’ve come as an image maker and storyteller.

I’ve also noticed that over time my workflow, editing techniques, changes in my taste, and even software development has allowed me to find something intriguing or distinct in images I had previously discarded or written off.

Seeing and examining your patterns can also push you to try new techniques and approach image making in ways that evolve your practice.

Looking back at past work can reveal patterns in your approach or subject matter that you weren’t aware of or that point to a deeper interest you may want to explore.

Taking some images out of their original context can give them new meaning and importance.

It may not have fit within the story you were telling or the world may have changed and made the image or body of work more relevant.

Examining your past work allows you to see it with new eyes. Sometimes you come across something that didn’t work at the time but feels important or noteworthy today.

The slower pace of this time of year often gives me the space I need to reflect on my work and its current trajectory. It’s been unusually busy lately (thankfully) but in between assignments I’ve been digging into my archive and it’s something I think all photographers should do every year.
