On assignment this weekend on the frozen waters of Back Lake, MI. This is gonna be a fun one.

It’s sometimes hard to see in the moment but when you take a step back and see the depth and breadth of your own work over time, it can be just the kind of reminder you need to push through difficult times in this beautiful, brutal, and rapidly changing industry.

It’s a good reminder that the more you work at this, and the deeper you dive into the work, the better it will be.

Lastly, for me, digging through my archive shows me both how far I’ve come as an image maker and storyteller.

I’ve also noticed that over time my workflow, editing techniques, changes in my taste, and even software development has allowed me to find something intriguing or distinct in images I had previously discarded or written off.

Seeing and examining your patterns can also push you to try new techniques and approach image making in ways that evolve your practice.

Looking back at past work can reveal patterns in your approach or subject matter that you weren’t aware of or that point to a deeper interest you may want to explore.

Taking some images out of their original context can give them new meaning and importance.

It may not have fit within the story you were telling or the world may have changed and made the image or body of work more relevant.
