I Thought I Knew Silicon Valley. I Was Wrong Tech got what it wanted by electing Trump. A year later, it looks more like a suicide pact.

When @wired asked me to look at Silicon Valley in the age of Trump, I saw the crash of the idealism that originally drew founders--and me--to the tech revolution. Selling out the dream will not serve those moguls (or us) well. www.wired.com/story/silico...

The thing I hate is that the internet didn't have to be like this. For a while, it let independent media flourish. It let people who would never get interviews at established papers have a voice. It shifted the overton window away from people who already had money. God fucking dammit.

Commission presents Roadmap for effective and lawful access to data for law enforcement The European Commission presented today a Roadmap setting out the way forward to ensure law enforcement authorities in the EU have effective and lawful access to data.

Well, this horrible idea refuses to die so we should refuse to let it pass and start organizing again.

California’s Corporate Cover-Up Act Is a Privacy Nightmare California lawmakers are pushing one of the most dangerous privacy rollbacks we’ve seen in years. S.B. 690, what we’re calling the Corporate Cover-Up Act, is a brazen attempt to let corporations spy o...

S.B. 690 isn’t tech policy β€” it’s a civil rights threat. It puts immigrants, LGBTQ+ people, abortion seekers, and protesters at risk of silent surveillance. This Corporate Cover-Up Act must be stopped. #StopSB690

If six months ago you'd told me that in autumn 2025 I'd have to go to Canada to get my annual COVID vaccine but I wouldn't do it because coming back through immigrations was too risky for someone who had criticized the government, I would have looked at you like you were having a stroke.

Listen, we should not let the richest people in the world own a network of globe-spanning surveillance satellites connected to another network of satellites equipped with lasers and missiles that they "rent" to the US military. Come on.

The gap between open and closed AI models is closing faster than most realize.

Per dollar invested, open models may soon outperform their closed counterparts.

It’s a great time to be working on open and decentralized systems.

Watching what's going on with US Gov IT and data, non-US governments shouldn't simply seek to make their IT systems more independent. They should be asking how they make them resilient to the potential of their own future DOGE-like actors. Moving more operations to independent NGOs, for instance.

RFK Jr.: It Would Be Better if β€˜Everybody Got Measles’ β€œThe measles gave you lifetime protection against measles infection,” Robert F. Kennedy Jr. told Sean Hannity on Fox News.

I'm old enough to remember when polio ripped through the globe and put my friends into iron lungs.

We dutifully lined up at school to get vaccinated. We eradicated the disease. We protected the common good and saved lives.

RFK Jr leading HHS is a disgrace.
