Yes, STEM departments often bring in grant money, but grants often don't cover the full cost of research and those departments still end up costing more (especially medicine - research hospitals are *staggeringly* expensive to run). 3/

To start with the end: universities charge, at the undergraduate level, one fee for admission and courses, but humanities courses are much less expensive to offer per seat.

The best argument I heard at the HxA conference in defense of the humanities in today’s university was: “We cannot afford to lose all of that important cancer research.” Come again? Translation: The humanities are going down and taking the rest of us—grant-funded scientists who focus on medical research or the physical sciences—with them. Will be hard to explain in the future that the US government went antivax, causing a lot of avoidable suffering and death, not in response to any negative incident with vaccines, but to the biggest, fastest, most successful, most impressive vaccine rollout in history.

I'm honestly still aggravated about it all these years later! I get that it's not my circus, but it was a gut punch to see years of work and relationships just cast off, and then to watch those people who you took care of and cared for be run through the wringer!

We (royal we for when CBS Interactive still existed and I worked there) sold the legacy CNET properties (Gamefaqs/Gamespot/giant bomb) to a private equity group.. and if you look at the trajectory of literally every brand, it's heartbreaking, save for the handful which were saved by passionate folks

I think much of today's problems are because we misgendered God and gave Them the "He/Him" pronouns.
