Some corporations are doing that and some are just hiring contract workers directly and probably don’t get in trouble because workers aren’t complaining because they need the work.

In my last nonprofit job, our finance dept had guidelines for whether we could have someone as a 1099 employee or they had to be on payroll as it impacted our federal audits if we misclassified people. Based on IRS rules almost every company using contracted workers is not following the law.

There should be a minimum contracted wage and a tax on employers who use contracted workers or who don’t offer benefits to cover provide worker subsidies. Given tax breaks to companies who reduce the gap between the lowest worker and the CEO.

These are all good ideas but at some point billionaires have to realize they really they just need to take less.

My career is in workforce development and job training. As technology advances, human-centered skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, and other interpersonal and communication skills become that much more important.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker rejects Texas Republicans' threat to arrest state Democrats:

"Texas law does not apply in the state of Illinois, and there's no federal law that would allow the FBI to arrest anybody that's here visiting our state. So it's a lot of grandstanding." @nbcnews.com

If employers faced any real penalties for hiring undocumented workers we would have immigration reform in a week. Employers love it because it allows them to abuse and mistreat workers who have zero recourse. Every worker should be fighting for immigration reform.

True: @zohranmamdani lives in 1 unit of rent-stabilized housing.

Also true: Andrew Cuomo oversaw the loss of 96,064 units of rent-stabilized housing. And killed NYC’s program helping people move out of shelter.

Leaders must show moral clarity. Andrew, time to move out. 🧵

RFK Jr. backs down all the time when he gets push back, so if anyone wants to call, here's the HHS number 1-877-696-6775.
I'd also call your senators/reps as well.

The empty store fronts across NYC are a huge problem and have been for years. It is because commercial landlords can take deductions for vacant properties which provide no incentive to lower rent. One of the city council members has tried to fight this but it is state law so nothing happens.

Also an immediate worker visa program so people coming here to work have worker protections, are paid fairly and employers are paying taxes on them.

Literally having this conversation this morning. I would say if we had put Nixon in jail we probably could have avoided Reagan and Bush.

Simple yes but conspiracy theories work for people who like to think they are smarter than the experts. Look at the anti-vax moms. So many of them really believe they are better equipped to make medical decisions than individuals who have gone to medical school & spent yrs practicing medicine.

This is so spot on. I would add that when technology is largely developed and funded by rich white guys with limited understanding of the needs of regular folks we get technology that limited or no social value.

Shopping and amassing stuff has become a replacement for civic and social engagement.

Yes. Post WW2 suburban homes in the 50s and 60s were tiny compared to today’s homes. Even in the suburbs most kids could walk to school and most families had one car.

Some of it was that we were the only competition in the global economy but it was also no billionaires, far less wealth disparity and more government spending.

I was just saying capitalism wouldn’t allow a democratic Miller because it means more less power for the rich and capitalism.

And being willing to live a little smaller. People don’t need massive SUVs and 4000 sq foot homes. It is nuts.

The problem is capitalism blocks pro-immigration policies because it would mean immigrants would have worker rights and protections and businesses would have to actually pay taxes on these workers. Miller’s plans work b/c corporations make billions on prisons and enforcement.

That is really it. They want the life of white families in the 50s and 60s with a more civil rights.

It reminds me of billionaires going to Davos to try and solve global poverty and income inequality. Buddy you might be the problem.

02.08.2025 13:58 — 👍 7    🔁 0    💬 0    📌 0

Absolutely. My original comment was focused on investors & businesses b/c they are ones most likely using this data. Regular folks don’t care what the job numbers are if their reality is no quality jobs paying a living wage.

But even amongst marginalized and horrifically abused groups of individuals we see a small percentage who end up becoming aggressors. That isn’t to deny the real discrimination and abuse. There are definitely gay and trans MAGA and look at Israel.

They do produce data but they also produce those reports with government data sources. If you hop on a Bloomberg terminal that is largely pulling public and gov’t data.

The stock market is one piece of the investment pie. And while the investment professionals may lie or do shady stuff as we saw with 2008 that doesn’t mean they don’t use real accurate data.

Mainstream media still bending over backwards to cover up the two biggest news stories in the world: 1) trump/epstein and 2) trump's brain is melting.

big days for both and right now the NYT has nothing on either on the front page but does have a Sydney Sweeney profile above the fold

Yes. I know the billionaire investors don’t care about democracy, human rights or the environment but we know they love making money. That can’t be done without good financial data. Also cooking the books won’t magically give us regular folks all more $$ to pay our bills or afford the rent.

I am curious why there isn’t push back from the investment & banking world. Independent clean economic & labor market data is used to make so many investment decisions. Even if companies use private data systems that data is pulled from many gov’t sources.
