The behavior of our caretakers toward us growing up was overwhelmingly about them, not us.

We couldn't "make" our caretakers love or nurture or abuse or neglect us.

We did not "attract" or "trigger" their behavior.

We did not "fail" to "earn" their love.

Trauma survivors often dissociate not just because what happened was awful-- it's also because we tend to be self-aware & sensitive in ways many don't understand. It's hard to pay bills & make breakfast when you're acutely aware of how tragic & beautiful every second & breath is.
