Az, a white anthropomorphic toy-pegasus, flies through space. A massive black hole with its disc sits in view a good distance behind him. Streaks of rainbow with sputters of black inky energy bursts from Az's high-heeled shoes with horseshoes nailed underneath. He's got a cowboy vest, hat, and stirrups on, all black and dark blue with an ethereal blue undertone. Az himself is solid white with cyan hair, painted nails, and arm warmers, with bright white wings outstretched on his back. He's looking at the viewer mischievously, his own eyes having off-white cyan "whites" and deeper cyan irises. He also has distinct eyelashes with stylized, round tips. Az's arms are outstretched in different directions as he soars in style, his whole body bent in a fashion as if to suggest he's just narrowly avoided colliding with the viewer. Az approaches a crudely drawn human. He's really big here, like 10' something minimum. His eyes are wide, with his pupils in the shape of stars. His sleeves, shaped like hooves, reveal two human-like arms sticking out of them almost haphazardly, which are reaching for the human. The human is staring back with a comically wide-eyed look of fear. Az's head is tilted in a wide-legged stance, which I have this habit of drawing characters in. "hello" Az says. He's big enough that he has to lower himself, being at risk of scraping the ceiling if he were to slightly raise his upper body. He dwarfs everything else in the, admittedly, crudely drawn abstract room, filled with what looks like furniture.

at a glance knowing what I know of this setting and Mystery Dungeon, Pokemon thrives a lot off the idea that Pkmn are only *sorta* animals, they lean extensively towards housepets (a la warrior cats) but also towards being plasticky bug-touys that don’t quite work on the same level as living beings

Tbh I suspect part of the issue is that you are shortcutting part of the Pokemon concept without realizing it, and finding that without those parts Pokemon lose part of what you seek to riff on
