I make a living dinking around with computers. My hobbies are reading, writing, gardening, photography, trying to fall asleep at night, and trying to stay awake during the day.

On his best day, he's Shelob.

Hopefully the last racist to leave MAGA will remember to turn out the lights.

If it's anything like Musk's other projects, it will produce widespread annoyance.

It might not be kosher to cow someone raised as Hindu.

But I'm sure someone can think of an appropriate creature.

In many ways, Star Wars mirrors my personal journey: peaking in the 1980s, almost two decades of bliss, a few nasty episodes near the turn of the century, a decade or so of reprieve, and then a sequence of desperate attempts to squeeze meaning and monetization out of it all.

Well, it looked a lot more in focus on my phone.

People shooting at people are even worse than regular obnoxious people at the mall.

It's fantastic how in about a week I've already eclipsed the number of followers and their level of engagement here on bsky that I had on twitter and threads *combined*.

Saw a hawk while out on a walk this morning. Then saw a dead branch that looked like a strange bird.

You’re probably seeing more.

At any given time there are about a dozen writers who know what they’re doing and about a dozen writers who think they know what they’re doing. There is no overlap between these groups.

It’s my traditional day of going nowhere near anything resembling a shopping mall.

The longer the letter, the more you’re equivocating. Get right to the point in the first sentence.

β€œYou should admit XYZ to your program because you’d be an absolute idiot otherwise.”

Then make your case, and conclude.

Everyone gets strong letters. Write a memorable letter instead.

People tend to fixate on the big problems in their lives, even when those problems are not really very serious, and lose sight of the many positive things for which they could take joy.

Step back and look at the big picture.

And give thanks.

Funny how you can think you know a sibling after being raised together, sharing common beliefs and interests and whatnot, and then, after more than 60 years, you accidentally discover that for most of their adult life they’ve been keeping their peanut butter in the fridge.

Looks like the arc of the moral universe is going to wriggle around for a while before it gets back to bending toward justice.

I advise people to follow their calling. I wouldn’t advise anyone about any particular career without knowing more about them. If pressed, I would mention that many local town governments are under financial pressure and library budgets are being squeezed, so don’t expect to job security or $$$.

Every culture I can think of has its own version of thanksgiving, for exactly that reason. The fact that we trace our holiday traditions back to colonial events is a red herring.

I've never considered arranging my bookshelves by color... Well, to be honest, my bookshelves are barely arranged by any method, except that I keep all the P.G. Wodehouse together, and all the A. Trollope on one shelf, safely distant from the pile o'Pynchon.
