I argue that even wacky relativists like me should reject the claim that mental state ascriptions are works of fiction. And if *I* shouldn't be a fictionalist, then surely more reasonable people like *you* shouldn't be fictionalists either.

i've had success teaching the bit on Morton in The Mismeasure of Man as a prelude to The Racial Contract, since Mills doesn't really dig into the role of science in racial mythmaking, and it helps make Mills's claims about the Racial Contract being epistemological really concrete for students

philosophy is the ethos that we should judge all positions in their strongest, most defensible forms, except relativism, which we should judge based on the views of undergrads

NEWS: Thanks to courageous West Virginia coal miner Harry Wiley and his brilliant attorney, Sam Petsonk, over 100 NIOSH workers in Morgantown, WV just got their jobs back and the crucial Coal Workers Surveillance Program will be restored.

They took on RFK and the Trump adminβ€”and won. Story soon.

all beliefs are of course difference makers, counterfactual dependence causes, etc

02.05.2025 18:14 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

the other complicating factor is that i only take attitudes of belief to be acausal on a narrow, "producing" conception of what constitutes a cause (which pushes towards but isn't quite identical to how you now define "deep")

nice. fwiw, i'm happy to say that cognitive states of belief are properties of persons--and that (eg) jackson&pettit-style cognitive states of belief are superficial properties of persons (so i agree that your distinction doesn't reduce to mine)
