Knuckles in Green Hill Zone, from the Retro Engine version of Sonic 1, as featured in Sonic Origins.

Truly a mystery for the ages. At the very least, the Retro Engine versions were able to add Knuckles in his full red glory thanks to a lack of palette restrictions.

I tried this (albeit with a different filter) and noticed an immediate and very clear difference. The game looks so much more "3D" now.
