Hauntology is real and it happened to me.

While I'm M.R.James posting, after reading Mark Fisher's "The Weird and The Eerie" in lockdown I wanted to do the "On Vanishing Land" walk he did. I took this polaroid of Cobbolds Point at the start of the walk and couldn't have asked for a better accident than this ghostly apparition.

I've walked along the beach in suffolk where "Whistle And I'll Come To You" is set and it's not difficult to imagine being stalked along it by an ancient ghost.

Call me Mr James the way I be blowing on that whistle.

A dream I've been nursing is one March taking myself off (by bus) to Lynmouth/Lynton to stay in the weird victorian hotel there for a week or so, to work on some art. Maybe go for a walk along the coastline, Could find and blow little whistle, get followed by a distant ghost, that sort of thing.

- Draw your eye to the focal point on their fist. I think it's really something you learn with experience? You start seeing it everywhere, from museums to concept art. Very strong technique!!

Look at what I've done here with this characters left fist, and look for other examples in art you like, the trick is to squeeze contrast out of a surprisingly small value range. The chestplate and the gauntlet are less different tonally than you might think but the shape of the gradient helps -

It's pretty vibe forwards as an approach, maybe I'll write something down for it soon, i'm a bit dyslexic so I struggle to articulate these things sometimes. My tip would be:

The main reason I made this piece is because I learned the power of a "gradient behind a focal point" and when you learn that you can make real nice art.
