Mostly here to riff on Original Series Star Trek.
Makes me think about the green vs gold tunic debate in TOS :)
30.11.2025 23:10 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Thank you! Itβs all just a wordy way of saying Shatner was a Shakespearian actor and Nimoy a Method actor, but whenever I hear interviews Iβm always struck how often they just emphasize very different things.
30.11.2025 16:20 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I donβt have a specific interview in mind, itβs just my impression based on various interviews/books/etc. Nimoy was more of a method actor, while Shatner was more Shakespearian.
30.11.2025 03:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβm still always amazed at the serendipity that brought these two actors together, who were in some ways very similar and in other ways completely different.

I donβt think youβd see Shatner ruminating about how a certain sequence fits in with whatβs established about his character and how it works in the known universe of the show. But he has a bigger range than Nimoy and is always up for anything (humor, pathos) to make the scene more engaging.
3/
Shatner is more interested and whatβs going to make the greatest emotional impact on a scene and his role within it. Nimoy is thinking about the consistency of his character and the larger world-building. Both are valid approaches!
2/
I love old interviews like this, before Star Trek became hugely popular. What strikes me is that Shatner and Nimoy are both very thoughtful, but not about the same thing. Shatner is more attentive to his *performance*; Nimoy is more attentive to his *character*β¦

Whoa whoa whoa please donβt tell Star Trek VI is pushing forty years old π±

27.11.2025 15:08 β π 71 π 7 π¬ 4 π 1Haha Iβm a fan of formal grammar but sometimes casual English is called for :)
25.11.2025 12:22 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes!!
25.11.2025 03:01 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I think the palette of Star Trek was unique, even with the RCA connection. This was Jerry Finnerman's first job as cinematographer, and he used the opportunity to do a lot of experimental work with colored gels in lighting sets. His "noir in color" approach gave Star Trek something special.
25.11.2025 02:00 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It's been remarked before how to some extent this use of color was influenced by tv-maker RCA, who owned NBC at the time. I'm sure there's truth to that, although shows at other networks, like Batman (ABC) and Gilligan's Island (CBS) also leaned heavily into color...
25.11.2025 01:59 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 4 π 0He was becoming more important as a character. By Season Three he was in every episode.
24.11.2025 23:40 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I know Scotty was not in the Big Three but sometimes I wish he was just because I like the contrast of the gold/green, blue, and red uniforms side by side.
24.11.2025 22:53 β π 20 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Science Fiction is so often presented with a sleek, minimal aestheticβ¦ Monochromatic greys, whites, and metal shades predominate. One of the things that makes Star Trek stand out is its extravagant use of color.

24.11.2025 22:33 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It does feel like that sometimes!

23.11.2025 23:50 β π 196 π 37 π¬ 10 π 1Completely agree
23.11.2025 14:16 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Lots of ink has been spilled about Shatner and people can have whatever take they wish, of course. Heβs brought me too many good moments on film and in person for me not to be a fan. I do sometimes wonder why he gets more flak than Roddenberry, whose behavior was considerably worse.
23.11.2025 02:08 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 3 π 0Co-stars he worked with on other shows tend to have positive things to say about him. He was probably at his worst on Star Trek; I wouldnβt go so far as to call him toxic, personally, but you can certainly disagree.
23.11.2025 02:01 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Yes, heβs not a paragon, but no one is. Like most people, heβs messy
22.11.2025 18:51 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Looks like theyβre waiting for Natiraβ¦
22.11.2025 12:45 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Shatner sucking in his gut in this picβ¦ actually, I have total sympathy for him: starting to push forty, working on this tv show with a stressed-out crazy schedule, his marriage rocky, and heβs a guy who genuinely likes his food. Amazing he didnβt gain more weight, really.
22.11.2025 12:44 β π 10 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Ouch! Hope you feel better soon!
22.11.2025 12:40 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Not sure where I first saw it online, perhaps from @portalrealm.bsky.social, who often has great production images
