17. Madonna and Child between Saints Catherine and Mary Magdalene by Giovanni Bellini, c1490
I went to Venice and saw loads of stuff. Then I saw this, the one that stopped me in my tracks.

I tried on a pair of these Smart Glasses in a shop last week. They feel cheap and look stupid. Surely no one is going to want to walk around looking like an idiot, unless of course they are an idiot.

16. Half the air in a given space by Martin Creed
Another non-painting, an installation I saw and plunged into in Leeds City Gallery in 2000. The most fun I've ever had in an art gallery.

I didnโt know that but it doesnโt surprise me. She knew more about art and art history than people give her credit for.

15. Lady Agnew of Lochnaw by John Singer Sargent, 1892
Sargent was the absolute master of light and texture, but the added erotic charge of this hits me every time I see it in the Scottish National Gallery.

Many people deride Beryl Cook, but if some early 20thC French bloke painted this theyโd say he was a primitivist genius

In hospital, waking from a general anaesthetic, I had such an intense vision of this painting. I could see every brushstroke as clearly as if I'd painted it myself.

When I was a student I met a woman (relative of a friend) who owned several pictures by Edward Lear. I'd never seen art in anyone's home before. You mean that's really yours?
