“Log in” ⬅️ “Enter that into the log-book” ⬅️ “Record how fast we’re sailing relative to an (actual wooden) log floating still in the water”
They’d use an hourglass for time and measure distance to the log by counting the knots in a rope, so “knots”=speed!
