Summers are always creatively draining. This year I worked night shifts in unbearable humidity, often just waiting for the night to pass in silence. Ended up with 2 novel drafts and 3 new short stories. We'll see who ends up grabbing them โœ๐Ÿป #booksky #writerssky

Thinking about themes, I have to remind myself that sometimes the ordinary is more profound than any grand philosophy.

Try it out! It won't be perfect the first time, but the same applies to writing and any other skill. We only get better the more we do it

Decided to take up digital art again after a long break. Looking forward to drawing the places and people from my stories โœ๐Ÿปโœจ

Further up the hill, a moonlit landscape dotted by firelight came into view. Ferlen was a quiet corner of the world, gentle slopes and lush meadows about her. The five counties were set into the terrain by lakes and streams before any Elgari tribes gathered there from the eastern woodlands. The land was their mother โ€” and good care of them she took, with soft hands and a stern voice. News of the outside world only arrived through the mouths of distant travelers or drifted on the tender waves of the Silver Sea, who laid them upon Ferlenโ€™s pebble shores. And they preferred it so.
What the Elgari knew best was the way of winter. This far up north, every creature lived on the terms of long summer days and winter nights, both harsh in their own ways, but merciful as long as no offense came their way. The Elgari, quiet and resilient like the land, thought these terms fair.

Yeah sometimes I google sketchy stuff for book research, but itโ€™s embarrassing how many of my searches are just spelling and synonym questions.

#writingsky Starting the new year by challenging myself to writeโ€”and readโ€”more short fiction. โ€œTo Drive the Cold Winter Awayโ€ by @ecatherine.com was the best possible piece to start this challenge, thank you ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

With everything going on, this quote from Stephen King sums up my mood lately:

"I'd think 'This isn't the way our lives are supposed to be going.' Then I'd think 'Half the world has the same idea.'"

I used to oppose any #writing craft books, but a whole new world has opened to me in the past year. Current favorites include "Techniques of a Selling Writer" by Dwight V. Swain and "Anatomy of Story" by John Trudy

...they all knew their miracles had a cost. Some of them had seen me weep or collapse, others were content to merely listen to rumors. They all knew the cost had to be paid. Some of them understood why and some did not, but they all understood that their health, their happiness, the beauty of their city, depended wholly on my abominable misery.

#writingcommunity Letting a 1st draft rest is really like placing it inside a cocoon, where it can rest and grow and develop

And though it hurts to peel away that cocoon in the 2nd draft and let go of what it used to be, the story will always come out more beautiful๐Ÿฆ‹

Tragically underutilized as a trope. Mainstream sci-fi depicts humanity as the abuser and nature as the victim, but given recent events, I want more narratives that envision a brighter future where the two can live side by side (in the spirit of Ursula K. Le Guin) ๐Ÿ“–

Current sci-fi hyperfixation: Arcologies (coined by Paolo Soleri in 1969). Blend of architecture + ecology that allows for dense populations with low ecological impact, and the result is these sexy behemoths
