Many rail users in the south-east travel to and from train stations using both bike share schemes & their own bikes.

Government should be encouraging people to travel using public transport and active travel as opposed to discouraging them doing so with unscientific, knee-jerk legislation.

Today we wrote to Minister O'Brien outlining our opposition to the mandatory helmet and hi-vis proposals.

We'd encourage our members to email their local TDs to outline their views. @irishcyclingcmpn.bsky.social have outlined the research below:

The Irish Cycling Campaign will be appearing before the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport today.
The focus today is on Road Safety.
We look forward to discussing the importance of a public health-led, safe systems approach to road danger reduction.

This is incredibly disappointing and will surely threaten the success of the Bolt e-bike and e-scooter scheme in #Wexford. This will only serve to discourage people from cycling.

Car brain government = car brain policies without any basis in research or evidence.

Yellow text on black background wear what you want ride what you want - thatโ€™s all there is to it

There can be some gatekeeping in the cycling community so just remember that when it comes to biking there are only two rules: Wear what you want. Ride what you want and don't let anyone tell you differently

We often hear comments of the Newtown Rd not being heavily used by bicycle riders..

๐Ÿค”Imagine if the council created a road that began and finished at either side of a field, how many drivers would use it? ๐Ÿค”

Once it is added to & joined up, then weโ€™ll see..

Judge's comments show bias against cyclists is 'deeply embedded' in Irish society There are five actions we can take to save lives on our roads, if we choose to implement them

www.irishexaminer.com/opinion/comm... Worked with a team in Finland re active travel, they genuinely could not fathom why people objected to cycle lanes here. "But you are making their lives better?" Ah no, you see, we hate cyclists.

Cycling without a helmet and high-vis clothing may be made criminal offences inย Ireland -- Law areound cyclists being reviewed with e-scooter proposals for helmets and high-vis. Seรกn Canney, the Minister of State for road safety, is considering making it illegal to cycle without a helmet and high-vis on public roads in Ireland. It has already been reported by other media outlets that the Department of Transport was looking at compulsory helmets and high-vis for e-scooter users, but confirmation that the legal review also included bicycle users was outlined in an answer to a parliamentary question in recent days.

We echo this sentiment. The RSA badly needs reform. Not only are lives being lost but people are also suffering from life changing injuries at unacceptably high rates due to the lack of action on road safety. We also call on @darraghobrientd.bsky.social to enact the promised reform.

Shameless Garda PR blitz links road deaths to visibility issues in cases where there is noย link Comment & Analysis: Sadly, I have to start this article by saying, for the avoidance of doubt, nothing in this article says 'don't be visible'. Lights are a legal requirement, and it'd be a good start if the Gardai enforced them, and people walking should take steps to be visible on unlit roads. I get it, nobody likes it when people are walking on unlit roads in the dark without lights and wearing dark clothing, and it's annoying when some cyclists think they are ninjas.

New Irish Study Shows Protected Bike Lanes Donโ€™t Slow Emergency Vehicles Another evidence-based rebuttal to one of the most common arguments levelled at bike lane projects: that they slow down or block emergency vehicle.

A fantastic report from Limerick with an unequivocal conclusion: the majority of Limerickโ€™s protected cycle lane schemes โ€œmaintained or enhancedโ€ access for emergency vehicles.

Will our planners listen though? That is the question.

When you see Dutch cycling, itโ€™s amazing. Trying to weaponise it against cycle paths in Ireland does not fit the facts and is just kind ofย silly Comment & Analysis: When discussing the promotion of cycling, the Netherlands is often mentioned for obvious reasons, given that it is decades ahead of nearly everywhere else and has a number of cities where more than 50% of residents cycle to work or education. So, naturally, people who don't want cycle paths will come up with excuses why we cannot follow the Dutch.

Lower speed limits will help Ireland reduce road deaths Wales cut road casualties by 28% after reducing speed limits. Yet only one of the new lower speed limits introduced in Ireland's Road Traffic Act 2024 has been implemented

Clear reasoning as to why we need a national evidence based approach to delivering default 30kph limits in built-up areas.

Delegating this to local govt will mean delays & inconsistencies & lead more pointless deaths & serious injuries.
