In his latest work my student @evanhockings.bsky.social shows you can use ACES noise characterisation to train a decoder and improve noise suppression in the surface code even for very large codes.

Why characterise noise in syndrome extraction circuits? One reason: directly improving quantum error correction!
In simulations of the surface code, we find that noise-aware decoding—calibrating the decoder with noise estimates—improves the code's error suppression factor.
Large scale characterisation of errors in quantum computers. Very excited to see @evanhockings.bsky.social first paper out just days before he submits his thesis.
